Location: Malawi, Africa
Background: Cindy and I have been Pastoring Churches in the USA for the past 30 years and from 2002 – 2015 we pastored the Log Church. It was our every intention and expectation to continue in this calling until we retired. However, God grabbed ahold of our hearts in many ways over the years and planted a heart for the world to know Christ and the power of His love. In 2013 through our friendship with Patricia Wadenpfuhl of Ancient Path, we made our first short term mission trip to Malawi, Africa. It was particularly on this trip that the Lord began to break our hearts for the dear people of Malawi and helped us to begin to see them through His eyes. We truly left a piece of ourselves in Malawi and God began to plant the seeds of a more permanent calling. In 2015 that calling was confirmed in a very powerful way through prayer, the Word of God and many signs of confirmation. We took the leap to follow God’s call to leave everything we knew in the USA and to move our family to Malawi and serve Him there for as long as the Lord wills. We moved to Malawi in June 2016 and are now serving the Lord full-time in this new mission field. We now live in the capital city of Lilongwe and serve with Ancient Path Community, an arm of Ancient Path in Malawi that focuses on discipleship, mentoring, leadership development and the cultivating of Christian Community to advance the Kingdom of God.
Ministry highlights from 2016: Since arriving in Malawi in June 2016, we have settled in to our ministry here as we have learned to trust in the Lord’s provision for absolutely everything! Malawi is the poorest country in the world and as you can imagine, the needs and opportunities for God to work are endless! Since arriving we have established weekly worship and prayer gatherings in Kaliyeka – one of the poorest townships in Lilongwe--where we bring people together for prayer, worship and teaching about the Kingdom of God. We lead a tutoring ministry for the older secondary students of Ancient Path in Kaliyeka and provide oversight for the primary school that AP operates here. We provide friendship, love and mentoring for our Malawian leadership team on a day-to-day basis as well. In addition Fred has established a leadership training program for pastors in a network of rural villages called Sanjiko, just outside of Lilongwe – this involves both training events and in-home visits of leaders for mentoring. Cindy provides guidance and mentoring for the primary school and countless women, youth and children that she pours love into everyday. We also lead a group of about 30 young adults that meet three times weekly for prayer, worship and learning together about the Kingdom of God. And there is so much more…how can we tell you about Hastings, Tryness, Joy, Vinnie, Prince and Princess, Beatrice, and the countless other children, youth and other precious people we see everyday that are looking for even just a little hope! The main thing God does here is put people in front of us everyday to love! Our challenge is to be obedient and listen to His voice and to learn to love well. We have seen God do so many miracles in our hearts and the hearts of the people of not just Kaliyek, but Sanjiko and the refugees we minister to at Dzeleka refugee camp.
2017-2018 Ministry Goals:
To gain a greater mastery of Chichewa (the traditional language spoken here);
To finish our training in teaching English as a second language.
To establish a leadership training school centered in Kaliyeka called “School of the Ancient Path”,
To see God provide land and resources for a House of Mercy as a safe house for children, youth and women in need of temporary shelter due to abandonment, abuse or homelessness.
To grow deeper in our capacity to lay everything down for the sake of knowing Christ!
Specific Prayer Requests: Please pray for God’s continuing care and provision for our family that remain in the US (Ashley and Jerod, Kiersten, Bethany and Emily) and Isaiah who is with us in Malawi.
Please pray for God’s supernatural provision of everything necessary for the safe house (House of Mercy) we are dreaming of in Kaliyeka. The only way something like this is possible is through the direct hand of God moving to provide everything!
Please pray for spiritual protection for all of us living and working here in Malawi and especially. Please pray that we will stay so close to Christ and keep our hearts and eyes focused on Him and Him alone!
Comments: We are so humbled and thankful for your partnership with us as individuals and as “The Log Church”! Having been in Malawi for nearly a year now, we cannot emphasize enough how much it means to us to know you are earnestly praying for us, partnering with us in our work here and encouraging us! There is such need for break-though in the lives of people and no one can do it alone. God is the one who brings the break-though and He does so as we partner in faith, Prayer and serving the Kingdom together. Thank you so much!!
